Aalborg Adventures Episode 8: Here Comes the Sun

March 27, 2018

[Mom Note:  To Raya's faithful following. I got behind! Apologies.  But we will get caught back up by next Monday.  You'll see a post a day until then; so get ready for the Aalborg Adventures to be kicked ino hyperdrive . . . ]

Hello Hello Hello!!!

Danish Phrase of the Week: det blæser en halv pelikan. Literal translation: it's blowing half a pelican.  What it means: wow this wind is strong!

Danish Fun Fact: Fish is the main (and really only) dish of a Danish Easter

This week was a good start to a new transfer.  Søster Matheson and I began by making some pretty grand goals for this transfer.  We are going to hyggefy our apartment, focus on inviting people to act on their faith, bring our neighbors cookies and I'm going to learn how to play the harmonica to name a few.  The week started off by a great lesson with Tina!! She is still glowing from her baptism and excited to begin her life as a member of the church.  We showed her the video of the Restoration and I think she really felt the Spirit.  I'm so happy for her!

Another fun addition to our week came in the form of MLC! Søster Matheson and I made the long and lengthy train ride from Aalborg all the way to Copenhagen (about 4 1/2 hours) for the mission leadership conference.  We ate some great food, played some ping pong, and made some good plans that I think will really throw our missionary work into high gear! We're pumped.

We also had a fantastic district meeting.  Half of our district changed this past transfer, and we have a entirely new greenie!! We went from being the oldest district in the mission to one of the youngest.  It's been super fun to feed off the energy of all of these young missionaries.  It helps us oldies feel young and spry again.  We talked about ways to include the Spirit into every aspect of our work along with boldness.  This is going to be a transfer of confidence and I'm so excited to see the miracles that come from this! The catch phrase for the transfer is ''Got Mod?'' (credit to yours truly).  Mod means boldness in Danish.  I thought that I was pretty clever.  Right after we got home from district meeting we were doing some planning and heard some people's voices right below our window.  We looked out and saw a group of young adult Danes throwing cinnamon at their friend.  We were way excited to see this! Let me explain.  So one really funny (in my opinion at least) Danish ''tradition'' is that when a man turns 25 and is still unmarried, his friends kidnap him, ziptie him to a pole, and throw copious amounts of cinnamon at him.  I've seen the aftermath of many throwings but I'd yet to see it in action, thus explaining my joy of finally seeing someone get pelted with cinnamon.  It was a nice tidbit to our week.

So Sister Matheson is incredible.  We love all of the same things and we get along wonderfully.  One love that we share is music.  She can tickle those ivories like none other and we got to do a musical number for sacrament meeting! Me on flute, her on piano.  It went pretty well and I was just glowing from finally being able to play again.  I never thought I would ever miss those endless hours in a practice room, but I guess I do.  Slightly.  Our ward also did a pre easter concert and it was filled with lovely music and I was quite happy.  Great ending to a great week.

I started a new thing in my studies this week.  I got a new notebook and I'm going to make it into my ''small plates,'' just like Nephi had.  There, I will keep a record of God's dealings with myself and all things spiritual.  I also started the Book of Mormon over again and one verse that really stuck out to me was 1 Nephi 3:6 which says, ''Therefore go, my son, and thou shalt be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured.'' I've been wondering how one becomes favored of the Lord for a while now, and that one really hit me.  Sometimes I catch myself complaining about this or that and after reading this verse I've been trying to change that.  Murmuring will not put me favorably in the eyes of the Lord.  So I'm going to try my best to stop.  I'm going to adopt the attitude of come what may and love it.

Jeg elsker jer og er taknemmelig for alt hvad I har gjort for mig.  Tak for at jeg kender jer! Hav en dejlig uge!
